Loads of Activities to Make Your Spring Break Fun
We are all on our devices way too much. Cellphones, tablets, computers…not to mention T.V. and video games. Well now you are on vacation…in Door County…GET OUTSIDE! Door County is truly blessed with LOTS of outside including five state parks. Peninsula State Park, the largest of the five, is located between Fish Creek and Ephraim. The Fish Creek entrance is less that a mile from The Hilltop Inn. The park features 17 miles of snowmobile trails, 16 miles of cross country skiing trails, six miles of skate skiing trails, and six miles of snowshoeing trails. Ice fishing is popular off of the parks shore, winter biking is becoming more popular and sledding the 17th fairway on the golf course (hill 17) is a must do. The hill is very steep so very fun! There are several places to rent snowshoes, skis and sleds. Door County also has 19 county parks and scores of town parks, including 3 parks in Fish Creek.
The Door County Land Trust has preserved over 8,000 acres of land throughout the county. Much of the land has been turned into nature preserves and have hiking trails. Visit their website for details.
Sister Bay’s large sports complex features an ice rink where you can skate, play hockey, or broomball. The Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor has activities year round including guided hikes in the winter and many family friendly activities in their new nature center. Crossroads at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay is a 200 acre nature preserve and features many activities including astronomy, hiking, and free skiing weekends.
Want to be active but don’t want to be outside? Door county has two YMCA’s. One in Sturgeon Bay and one in Fish Creek. They both feature workout centers and aquatic centers. So you can stay in shape or just have fun swimming.
Door County is known for its art scene. Several theaters, lots of music and concert venues, loads of galleries…but what if you want to make your own art? You are in luck! The county features several well known art schools including The Clearing, a 128 acre Folk Art school located in Ellison Bay, Sievers School of Fiber Arts located on Washington Island, and Peninsula Art School which features classes and workshops for all ages and all skill levels located in Fish Creek right next to the Hilltop Inn. Don’t want to take a formal class? There are many places throughout the county that you can drop in and have fun making art. Located right outside Fish Creek is Hands On Arts Studio. They have 8,000 sq. feet of studio space where you can make jewelry, fuse glass, create a mosaic…so many projects for all skill levels! You can dip your own candles at Door County Candle Company in Carlsville, work with leather or wood at Clink in Ephraim, or make some rustic signs at either Reclaimed Resale and Workshop in Ephraim, or Stone Silo in Egg Harbor.
