But WHEN should you come?
Here are my top reasons for visiting Door County in May:
Quiet and Colorful
May is still considered “off season” so is still relatively quiet, especially if you are able to visit during the week. Mot seasonal businesses have re-opened by May and are very happy to see visitors coming back to the county, so you are sure to get a warm welcome everywhere that you go. The weather is usually mild in May, and the wild flowers and fruit trees are in bloom throughout the month blanketing the county in some lovely colors. This is why they have dubbed May “The Festival of Blossoms”.
Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5K
Door County is home to many, many sporting events during the year but one of the most popular is the Door County Half Marathon and Nicolet Bay 5K.https://doorcountyhalfmarathon.com/The races course runs through Peninsula State Park, the largest of Wisconsin’s state parks. The beauty of the location and the impeccable organization of the race makes it one of the most popular runs in the state, so registration fills up fast. They cap the half marathon at around 2500 runners each year.
Opening day for Wisconsin is traditionally the first Saturday in May and Door County is an ideal place to fish. The Sturgeon Bay area is one of the best places in the country for Small Mouth Bass fishing. There are two big bass tournaments in May. So if fishing for trophy bass is your thing, Sturgeon Bay in May is the place to be. The Sturgeon Bay Bass Tournament is held Thursday, May 9 through Saturday, May 11http://www.sturgeonbaybasstournament.com/. It is held at Sawyer park in Sturgeon Bay. The Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament is Thursday, May 16 through Sunday, May 19 and is held at Wave Pointe Marina just a little south of Sturgeon Bay.http://www.sbobt.org/home.html
Door County is home to over 2500 acres of Cherry Trees. The unique soils composition on the peninsula make it an ideal place to plant fruit trees. The orchards in bloom is a beautiful and stunning sight to see. No one can predict with pinpoint accuracy when the trees will blossom, they typically blossom in Mid-May. The apple trees with their beautiful pink blossoms usually blossom a week later. Because the peninsula is so long there are temperature differences between Southern and Northern Door. That means that the trees in the Southern part of the county start to bloom before they bloom in the Northern part and if there is no major storm that blows the blossoms off the trees, the trees will hold their flowers for at least a week. That usually gives visitors a three-week window to catch the blossoms. The Door County Visitor Bureau monitors the Cherry trees and usually gives updates on its Facebook page.https://www.facebook.com/DoorCountyWisconsin/
There are several festivals throughout the month of May. Are you crazy about birds? The Washington Island Birding Festival is May 16-19. Explore Washington Island in small groups led by an experienced birding guide. For more information visit wianc.org/bird-festival. If you are more of a dog lover, then the Door County Scottie Rally and Parade of Scotts is for you. The 2019 festival is being held May 17-18 in Baileys Harbor. It draws Scottie dogs and their families from all over North America and abroad. It is a fundraising event that supports Scottie Dog Rescues and health research. For more information visit their websitehttps://www.doorcountyscottierally.com/attend-the-rally/. The Door County Festival of Nature is held May 24-26. It features field trips and nature activities all over Door County. Here is a link to the festival brochurehttps://www.ridgessanctuary.org/wp-content/uploads/FestOfNatureBooklet2_2019.pdf. Jacksonport celebrates the beginning of summer with Maifest. Held at Lakeside park on May 25 and 26, the festival features live music, an art fair, fun run, parade, family midway, and more. For more information visit https://www.jacksonport.net/.
May is the month that Door County really wakes up. Flowers are in bloom, businesses are open, there is the anticipation of the season ahead, plus the events and festival are a real bonus.
